CDC Report Shows Over 80,000 Flu-Related Deaths In US Last Winter

Opportunities for free flu vaccines are plentiful in Umatilla County after the flu killed an estimated 80,000 people in the United States a year ago.

With the new vaccine now available, US government officials led by example by getting their own flu shot in front of assembled media Thursday in Washington, D.C. "Guess what? They got the flu from someone", Adams pointed out. Rarely, people who receive the flu shot experience muscle pain, a slight fever, and feelings of weakness or discomfort. People immunocompromised can get immunized.

The CDC recommends people get vaccinated by the end of October.

Officials determine the composition of the vaccine each year. AstraZeneca, the drug maker, announced Tuesday it began its first shipments of the mist.

"We don't know when influenza's going to strike either".

Flu vaccination decreases the chances that you will spread the virus to others. Under the new methodology, the CDC went back and reclassified the flu seasons from 2003-2016. "I will predict there will be a flu season". "We lost 80,000 people past year to the flu". "We want to ensure it won't be a bad season".

Flu can lead to permanent disability in older people.

But she pointed out another factor in most juvenile deaths.

Some women who submitted the survey had to be excluded because they didn't remember whether they had received the vaccines - a common problem in studies where participants are asked to remember something that happened, like this. When flu strikes during pregnancy, there's a greater likelihood of hospitalization for the mother-to-be, she said.

The CDC estimates at least 80,000 Americans died of flu-related complications last winter, exceeding the 56,000 deaths that occurred during the 2012-2013 flu season. For the H1N1 strain, the effectiveness was 67 percent.

"Getting the flu shot isn't just about keeping you safe and healthy", he said. But, Schaffner said, "There is a great deal of partial protection that the vaccine gives". That was exacerbated by the fact that last year's vaccine was not very effective, they said. If you're sick, stay home.

"I am the father of three young children", Adams said. "So there are simple steps that employers can take to help keep their employees safe and healthy so that they come to work, and to keep the people they're caring for safe and healthy", he added.

Of the deaths, 180 were children.

CDC officials do not have exact counts of how many people die from flu each year.

Swanson noted children are especially receptive to strong response from the vaccine. According to Webb-Collins, this is particularly important when it comes to school children who may come in contact with classmates who are not vaccinated or are sick.

Vaccination coverage dropped at a slightly faster rate among children ages 6 months to 4 years, an age group susceptible to serious illness and hospitalization.

"Think of it, 180 families put a child in a grave a year ago because of a vaccine-preventable infection", said Dr. Wendy Sue L. Swanson with Seattle Children's Hospital.
