New Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison selected his cabinet on Sunday after winning a three-way leadership battle on Friday.

Ms Bishop announced she would move to the backbench and had not yet decided whether to contest the next election, which is due by May 2019.

He was supported by former prime minister Tony Abbott, who was himself ousted by Mr Turnbull in 2015 (in 2009, when the Liberals were in opposition, Mr Turnbull was unseated as party leader by Mr Abbott). Bishop, the party's deputy leader, reportedly secured just 11 votes out of 85 in the first round - significantly lower than Morrison and the third challenger, Peter Dutton.

Several Liberal sources said Mr King had told party members at the Liberal Party state council meeting in Nelson Bay on the weekend that he had the support of some branches in Wentworth.

Morrison named Marise Payne to replace Julie Bishop as foreign minister and promoted Christopher Pyne to oversee defence.

Shock jocks Alan Jones and Ray Hadley have reopened communications with Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

She served as minister for education and science and for women before becoming foreign minister in Tony Abbott's government in 2013.

Mr Morrison and the senator, who was also the government's leader in the Senate and chief negotiator with the crossbench, were photographed at work on Saturday.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann admitted the leadership crisis had taken a toll on the government's stocks.

Dutton maintained his role as minister for home affairs, but he created a new position to handle issues related to immigration and appointed David Coleman.

The new foreign minister's big challenge will be navigating a tricky relationship with China, Australia's top trading partner.

"While Labor has at times been critical of the foreign policy directions under prime ministers Abbott and Turnbull, Ms Bishop's commitment to standing up for Australia both here and overseas has never been in question". Mr Rudd was ejected by Julia Gillard and Mr Abbott by Malcolm Turnbull.

He has yet to announce any new initiatives to help farmers.

Nationals MP Keith Pitt also quit on Sunday as the Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister, protesting the government's efforts to address climate change and its commitment to the Paris agreement. I'm far more powerful than you could ever hope to be but I think the praise is in the wrong direction, ' he said. Turnbull said he was impressed by his party's decision not to reward Dutton and to elect Morrison, whom he descried as a "very loyal and effective treasurer".
