Shooting at video game tournament raises questions of security

27 August 2018

The deadly shooting during a Madden 19 National Football League tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, Sunday has prompted calls for tighter security at professional video gaming events.

The sheriff's office used Twitter and Facebook immediately after the shooting to warn people to stay far away and to ask anyone who was hiding to call 911. David Katz, from Baltimore, was the lone suspect, using "at least one handgun" on the victims and himself, Williams said.

"Heartbreaking to hear about the shooting at the Madden event", wrote Cristian Tamas, the director of esports programs for Twitch, the platform that broadcasts gamers' live streams.

"We have one suspect in this case and he is deceased, he is a white man and we are still trying to confirm his identity", Sheriff Mike Williams said at a news conference. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Madden publisher and the host of the tournament, Electronic Arts, responded to the shooting on Twitter, saying "this is a awful situation, and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved". One person is being treated for a minor injury at Baptist Medical Center, spokesperson Cindy Hamilton said.

"We did see him, two hands on the gun, walking back, just popping rounds", Poindexter told reporters.

The shooter was competing in the tournament, taking place at a mall called Jacksonville Landing, before killing other contestants.

Apart from these specs, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 comes with a fingerprint sensor, iris scanner, and facial recognition support. But if it's new you're looking for, Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 isn't the phone that should be on your radar.

"These things are hard to deal with, especially for people in Florida", he said.

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida tweeted that local authorities were in touch with federal resources needed as the investigation continues.

Reacting to news of the shooting during the tournament involving its game, Madden 19 maker Electronic Arts Inc said it was working with authorities to gather facts.

Gjoka tweeted that he was hit in the thumb when the tournament "got shot up". "I saw four people on stretchers and then two other guys getting carried". "Excuse me", the streamer says, and then begins talking again, apparently unaware of what was happening.

Florida highway patrol officers block the entrance to the Main Street Bridge near the scene of the mass shooting.

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry thanked law enforcement and medical personnel for their quick response to the incident, saying: "At awful times we see the best in people, and today is no different".
