Simon had a kidney transplant in 2004 and the donor was his longtime friend and publicist Bill Evans.
He was also known as a king of comedy, peppering his plays with a heavy dose of witty one-liners. Many of his plays were adapted into movies and one, "The Odd Couple", even became a popular television series.
He once had a record four plays running on Broadway simultaneously and in 1983 became the first playwright to have a theatre on the NY street named after him.
Tributes are pouring in for Neil Simon, the Broadway playwright behind classic such comedies as "The Odd Couple" and "The Sunshine Boys".
Randi Mayem Singer, whose screenwriting credits include the 1993 hit "Mrs. Doubtfire", tweeted that, "If you write comedy, if you write period, you learned something from Neil Simon". Simon later wrote for "Sgt. Bilko" and "The Garry Moore Show".
Over his lifetime, he penned more than 30 plays.
"In 1991 his play Lost in Yonkers, another serio-comedy, brought him his highest accolade - a Pulitzer Prize for drama - as well as a third Tony award".
Simon's first big hit was "Come Blow Your Horn" in 1961, followed by "Barefoot in the Park" in 1963, which was a seismic hit.
Trump’s Sunday ‘Tweetstorm’ Lashes out at NY Times, McGahn, Others
Giuliani said , "Look, I am not going to be rushed into having him testify so that he gets trapped into perjury". Giuliani however acknowledged that if the leak didn't come from Mueller, it may have come from McGahn.
Neil Simon, American playwright, screenwriter and author.
But it was his second play, "Barefoot in the Park", that really put Simon on the map.
Simon was the American theater's most successful and prolific playwright in the second half of the 20th century.
Simon soon returned to NY and began working in the mailroom of Warner Brothers' Manhattan office. It had barely closed when Simon's next play, "Little Me", opened on Broadway, starring Caesar in multiple roles and with choreography by Bob Fosse.
Since the end of that marriage, Simon had Wednesday actress Elaine Joyce.
Simon's death also hit home for actor Matthew Broderick, who made his Broadway debut in Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" in 1983 and also that year made his movie debut in Simon's "Max Dugan Returns". Behavior is absolutely the most interesting thing I can write about.
Mason appeared in his stage comedy "The Good Doctor" and who went on to star in several films written by Simon, including "The Goodbye Girl", "The Cheap Detective", "Chapter Two", "Only When I Laugh" and "Max Dugan Returns".
"But I am sorry because he was a great writer".
