Mr Pence cited the threat of China and Russian Federation as a basis for establishing the new military branch, claiming both Beijing and Moscow are "aggressively" developing anti-satellite capabilities.
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, in a Pentagon address, described the Space Force as "an idea whose time has come".
So we gotta ask.
In a letter to a United States congressman, he said he did "not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations", adding it would create extra bureaucracy and cost.
Democratic Senator Brian Schatz said on Twitter that Space Force "won't happen". This will be an "elite group of joint war fighters specializing in the domain of space", and it will draw its ranks from men and women from across the military, according to Pence. President Trump has also called on Congress to appropriate $8 billion for space security systems over the next five years. The Trump administration believes the Space Force will allow it to accomplish that goal, and the nation now has at least the beginnings of a plan to bring its fifth military branch to fruition.
The creation of the U.S. Space Command.
The White House said in a statement that "President Trump knows that space is integral to our American way of life and economic prosperity, and is a vital domain for national defense".

United were in talks to sign centre-back Mina before the deal was cancelled due to a row over agent's fee. The Red Devils paid a then world-record €105 million to bring him back to the club.
It says the department will establish a Space Command to develop warfighting operations, a Space Development Agency to more quickly identify and develop new technologies, a Space Operations Force of leaders and fighters and a new support structure.
Critics, even those who agree with the strategic significance of space, argue that creating a Space Force is "an unnecessary and expensive bureaucratic endeavor", as Reuters put it.
China and Russian Federation have had significant achievements in space - they have tested technology to shoot down satellites.
"What was once peaceful and uncontested is now crowded and adversarial", the vice president continued.
The new force would also aim to streamline existing space-oriented units within the existing branches of the armed forces.
The Pentagon's report was welcomed by some members of Congress.
Finally, the report calls for clear lines of responsibility and accountability to manage the process of establishing and growing the Space Force, including the appointment of an assistant secretary of defense for space, the vice president said.
Mattis had previously opposed the creation of a separate military branch focused on space, writing to Rep. Mike Turner of OH in July of 2017 that he did "not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations".
