Moms of 11 children found at New Mexico compound arrested

But Wahhaj's son Abdul-Ghani is still nowhere to be found.

Investigators confirmed they found the remains of a child at the New Mexico compound where 11 emaciated children were discovered living in an underground trailer. Authorities are awaiting a positive identification of the remains discovered on August 6.

Instead of finding the boy, Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, though, they found 11 other children living in squalor with no fresh water and little food.

But the officers returned to the site after questioning the suspects on Friday and Saturday, which led them to believe that the boy was still there.

"It's obvious to me that they were brainwashed and feel great intimidation from the men that were in control of this facility", Hogrefe said of the women and children.

The kids are still in state custody.

All five adults were detained, charged with child abuse.

Clayton County police said in a missing persons bulletin that Wahhaj and his son were last seen December 13 in Alabama, traveling with five other children and two adults.

Police say that a message with just 8 words led them to a "filthy" makeshift compound in the New Mexico desert where two Muslims were arrested after what they found there.

The father told the boy's mother before fleeing Georgia that he wanted to perform an exorcism on the child, who he believed was possessed by the devil, according to documents made public in a court filing on Monday. Meanwhile, Hakima Ramzi, Wahhaj's wife, said she was aware that her husband wanted to do something about their son's medical issues, CNN reports.

The sheriff said there was reason to believe the message came from someone inside the compound. The sheriff said it appeared the children hadn't eaten for days.

Badger said he had concerns about the compound near the Colorado border. The group told police they were headed to New Mexico to go camping, and continued on their way.

Five people charged with felony child abuse were due to make their first court appearance on Wednesday after 11 children were found malnourished inside a ramshackle compound in northern New Mexico.

Court records show a judge dismissed an eviction notice filed by Badger against Lucas Morton in June. He didn't provide further comment, citing the early stage of the case.

Abdul-Ghani was allegedly abducted by his father, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, in December 2017. Children ages 1 to 15 were rescued from the compound that had been under investigation for months.

"Yesterday, at 11:19 a.m. we did find remains of a young boy", said Taos County Sheriff Jerry L. Hogrefe said.

It is not clear who sent the message. Georgia detectives forwarded it to the Taos County Sheriff's Office.

This Fri., Aug. 3, 2018, photo released by Taos County Sheriff's Office shows Siraj Wahhaj.

Siraj Wahhaj was found armed with an AR15 rifle, five loaded 30-round magazines, and four loaded pistols, including one in his pocket when he was taken down, police said. But he eventually stopped visiting the compound that authorities have since described as filthy.

"I had no probable cause to get a search warrant to go onto this property", the sheriff said.

The Taos County sheriff identified the women facing charges as Jany Leveille, 35, Hujrah Wahhaj, 38, and Subhannah Wahhaj, 35. It was unclear how or why they ended up in New Mexico, Hogrefe said.

What authorities found was what Hogrefe called "the saddest living conditions and poverty" he has seen in 30 years on the job.

Mr Wahhaj told the trooper that he owned the guns legally and had a Georgia permit to carry concealed weapons.

40-year-old Siraj Wahhaj took his son and disappeared just under a year ago.
