Motorola debuts Moto Z3 as Verizon exclusive; 5G MotoMod coming in 2019

05 August 2018

In essence, the Moto Mod will make the Moto Z3 smartphone, as well as previous Moto Z phones that support Moto Mods, the first smartphones to support higher-speed 5G networks. As interesting as the Moto Z3 is, with its slightly tweaked design, and attractive price point, the real star of the show is the 5G Moto Mod.

On the specification front, the new Moto Z3 flagship smartphone comes with a 6-inch Super AMOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio and 2160X1080 pixel of resolution. Interestingly, the Z3 uses a slightly dated Snapdragon 835 processor - whereas most other flagship phones that have been released lately use the latest 845. It has 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage with option to expand storage up to 2TB. On the front, you'll find an 8-megapixel f/2.0 selfie snapper too. Which means Motorola is following Huawei's way of doing dual-cameras on the Moto Z3.

Motorola has also brought the 5G Moto Mod that is created to deliver a next-generation experience on the Moto Z3. With the Moto Z3 being so lackluster this year, an upgraded Force model would have been welcomed.

Moto Z3 and 5G Moto Mod have been launched in the US. In recent years, Motorola has tried to differentiate itself in the grueling smartphone market by producing modular devices. Motorola played it safe with no notch, while the bezels at the top and bottom are pleasingly narrow. The modularity of the Moto Z line is what allowed Motorola to launch the world's first "5G-upgradeable" smartphone. It has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. And because of the Moto Mods, there's no room on the back for one. For Verizon, specifically, there are only four cities that will get 5G coverage by the end of the year. In addition to the pins, which are there more for transferring data and connectivity, then holding the Mods in place. The Corning Gorilla Glass 3 takes care of the screen's protection. This will give the Motorola One a more premium look and feel. Running Android 8.1 Oreo, the device comes equipped with a dual camera set up - 12MP primary sensor along with a secondary monochrome camera with dual-LED flash. With an aperture of f/1.7, you will also get some great shots with incredible Bokeh.

The Moto Z3 doesn't have the shatterproof display that the Z2 Force had. Motorola was also expected to unveil the Motorola One and Motorola One Power Android One smartphones at this event, but it didn't.
