As acting EPA head, "Andrew Wheeler is well prepared to continue the progress already made under President Trump", Barrasso added.
The president announced Mr. Pruitt's resignation on Twitter and said Andrew Wheeler will take over Monday.
But as summer unfolded, the amount of pressure on Pruitt began to near its breaking point as former staffers came forward to air their concerns and accusations about the EPA chief.
Pruitt, who appears to be passionate about baseball and religion, doesn't seem particularly interested in the environment - or even, arguably, in destroying it.
Whether it's Wheeler or someone else, Brandy Doyle, campaign manager for social change network CREDO, said her group has no doubt Trump will appoint another "fossil fuel industry stooge as Pruitt's replacement". Before becoming a principal at the firm Faegre Baker Daniels, Wheeler was chief counsel for the Republicans on the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee. Though Mr. Wheeler previously served on the EPA's professional staff, he spent years working for Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) and James Inhofe (R-OK) - who voted to approve his nomination in February.
"But let's not forget he was carrying out President Trump's policies".
While Wheeler may find it hard to accumulate the same number of ridiculous scandals as his predecessor, many pointed to the fact that he hosted fundraisers for GOP senators while they were evaluating his nomination for deputy EPA administrator as clear evidence of his contempt for basic ethical standards.

The rules under Obama , a Democrat, were issued by the Department of Justice and the Department of Education. The new affirmative action guidance could add to an already contentious fight over the next justice.
Brandon Hurlbut, former chief of staff at the Department of Energy, said the ethics complaints are one thing that is likely to change with Wheeler.
The departure follows years worth of constant scandal and public outrage for Pruitt's constant profligate spending and insider dealing.
Trump signaled Thursday afternoon that it wasn't Pruitt's anti-environment views that led to his demise.
The official, describing Team Trump's feeling about Pruitt, wondered whether he would still hold his job as he could crop up in Democratic candidates' ads hitting the president's "swamp", CNN reported Wednesday. "He came to me and said I have such great confidence in the administration I don't want to be a distraction".
Pruitt's transgressions, in the eyes of many, were overwhelming: His flew first-class and asked aides about securing a military jet, secured a sweetheart apartment rental deal from a lobbyist, and sought government officials to give his wife a job, among other allegations.
Although Pruitt has always been known for his high-profile appearances dating back to his successful run for Oklahoma attorney general, reports paint Wheeler as a quieter political actor.
"It has become increasingly challenging for the EPA to carry out its mission with the administrator under investigation", said Barrasso, who is from Wyoming.
