U.S. to Present North Korea with Timeline Outlining Specific Requests

26 June 2018

Washington is expected to soon test North Korea's denuclearization commitment by presenting a rapid timeline and "specific asks" of Pyongyang, according to an unnamed senior us defense official.

The 1950-53 Korean War, and the devastation the country suffered at the hands of the United States and its allies, remain a major part of every North Korean's education.

North Korea and South Korea have also agreed to resume the reunions of war-torn families in mid-August.

It is unclear if North Korea will also attempt to narrowly interpret the denuclearization agreement Kim made with U.S. President Donald Trump at the Singapore Summit this month.

"North Korean anti-Americanism may have popular roots (nourished by decades of agitprop), but what we see is what the state wants us to", he added.

"I am not going to put a timeline on it, whether that's two months, six months, we are committed to moving forward in an expeditious moment to see if we can achieve what both leaders set out to do", Pompeo said.

"We hope that we will have an ongoing process of making progress", Pompeo said Sunday.

But executing the Lakers' longtime goal of becoming a title contender this summer still will be no easy task. Newman will join Kansas teammate Svi Mykhailiuk with the Lakers, selected 47th overall in Thursday's draft.

The Pentagon says Pyongyang has indicated several times that they have as many as 200 sets of remains that could be those of U.S. soldiers who died in the war.

Pompeo himself told reporters the day after the Singapore summit Washington hoped to achieve "major disarmament" by North Korea within Trump's current term, which ends on January 20, 2021.

Pompeo told CNN that instead he would "assess" the North Korean regime's promise to take steps toward "complete denuclearization" as the U.S. has suspended military drills on the peninsula.

The North's agreement to hold only a single week of reunions for 100 families, falls far short of what many expected after Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in promised "comprehensive and groundbreaking advancement of inter-Korean relations" in their joint declaration at the end of the inter-Korean summit in April.

Mattis will also push for more regional security cooperation from China by pointing out that the suspension of US military exercises with South Korea satisfies a major Chinese strategic objective, which is the real reason China has insisted so strongly on its "freeze-for-freeze" plan that made suspension of American exercises a precondition for nuclear talks with North Korea.

CNN said Pompeo suggested it was too soon to expect a detailed roadmap after 40 years of tensions but insisted that Kim had been "unequivocal" about his willingness to denuclearise.
