Shawwal moon not sighted, Eid-ul-Fitr in Pakistan on Saturday

"There have been positive sightings of the Shawwal crescent in Nigeria".

The crescent moon of Shawwal could not be sighted in the country on Thursday and hence Eid Al Fitr will be celebrated on Saturday, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan announced.

No testimonies of moon sighting were received in Muzaffarabad, Jhelum, Lahore, Mangla, Gujranwala and Islamabad.

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated differently in each culture in the world, however its significance remains the same in Islam.

At 7.20 pm Thursday, religious leaders climbed the minar at Jama Masjid with a telescope, hoping to catch a glimpse of the moon.

Earlier in the week, it was announced that public sector workers in the UAE would get at least Thursday, June 14 off for the Eid Al Fitr long weekend.

Abubakar said the new moon was sighted in parts of Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Borno, Jigawa, Nassarawa, Plateau and Sokoto States among others.

The observation ceremony of the crescent moon, signaling the beginning of the new month in Islamic calendar, will take place Thursday evening.

According to reports, in India, Eid will begin on June 14 and end on June 15.

Muslims across the country are preparing for the end of Ramadan to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.

The word Eid translates as celebration and Mubarak means blessed.

The first day of Eid al Fitr 2018 will be tomorrow i.e. Friday June 15, 2018 if the new moon is sighted today.

Mojaharul Mannan, director of the Cultural Department at the Islamic Foundation said: "We all work together to correctly determine the day of Eid".

"On this auspicious occasion as the Muslim Holy month concludes, a spirit of renewal for continued peace is paramount and should be encouraged by all believers", Mutharika said in a statement.
