Trump to Sen. Bob Corker: Abandon legislation challenging tariffs; Corker refuses

10 June 2018

Some GOP senators say they think they're close to reaching a deal to protect undocumented immigrants under DACA and secure funding for Trump's wall.

"Doing anything around here is like pushing a major boulder up hill", Corker said.

Joining Corker in introducing the plan was Democratic Sen.

His comments on Wednesday come after he told reporters on Tuesday that he would not bring Corker's legislation up as a stand-alone bill but noted that the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) would be open for amendment.

Perdue said he would like to avoid the "last-minute drama of a September 30 deadline" when lawmakers would have to choose between a government shutdown or voting for a giant and unwieldy omnibus spending bill.

As president, Donald Trump has insulted U.S. allies and top Republicans, threatened nuclear war on Twitter, shared top-secret intelligence with Russian Federation, and pushed immigration policies that are ripping apart families and damaging the US's image overseas.

Republicans are aiming to maintain control in the Senate, they now only have a 51-46 majority, leaving McConnell's future as Senate Majority Leader up in the air. The White House says the meeting focused on reducing the US trade deficit by having China buy more agricultural and energy products. "Part of this job is persuasion", said Cornyn.

There are eight days of session left for this legislative year, which means people are coming out in droves to the Capitol to make sure their bills see a vote.

The bill rolled out Wednesday requires the White "to submit to Congress any proposal to adjust imports in the interest of national security under Section 232 [of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962]".

That would be illegal, under the 2016 law, unless North Korea also agrees to key human rights reforms. Their relationship began after Trump's election with a long period of mutual threats and abuse.

Corker and other Republicans are pushing back on Trump's decision late last month to impose steep steel and aluminum on USA allies, a move that analysts said pushed the United States closer to a trade war.

In contrary to those who wanted the summer recess, Senator David Perdue (R-GA) said that his party, and indeed the Senate at-large, should take this time and be more productive.

In a statement on May 24, Corker said that President Trump "abusing the authorities granted to him in Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962" was part of "a risky course and should be abandoned immediately".

"I hope we'll get greater cooperation, but everybody should anticipate that we will be here", he told reporters.

The idea being pursued by Corker, Sen. "On policy grounds, they strongly support this".

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, said he also spoke to Corker about the proposal on Tuesday.

"If the Democrats can't win both in NY and, say, the Great Plains, we'll never be the majority", he said. Toomey's a free trader, although he opposed the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership, taking a campaign issue away from his latest Democratic opponent. Democrats have far more incumbents seeking re-election this year, and keeping them off the trail could be to the GOP's advantage. Of the Senate seats on the ballot this election cycle, 26 are held by Democrats and the independents who caucus with them, while just nine are held by Republicans.

Asked if the move was a shot across the bow aimed at his political opponents, McConnell responded, "If you look at the amount of work that we have to do, it's conceiveable to me that we can't use these weeks, even with cooperation, we've got a lot of approproiation bills to pass".
