Will Power finally wins the Indy 500

Will started third and led 59 of 200 laps en route to winning a wreck-filled race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Starting on the outside of row one alongside Carpenter and team mate Simon Pagenaud, Power steered well clear of trouble through seven cautions and then pounced when he had his chance in the final laps. Kanaan led at least one lap in his 14th Indy 500 to break a record he had shared with four-time race victor A.J. Foyt. Defending race victor Takuma Sato crashed out early in IndyCar's most prestigious race.

He was then tagged by 2017 victor Takuma Sato while getting back up to speed from a moment on lap 46 and retired.

The only woman to win an IndyCar race and start from pole at the Daytona 500, Patrick left her mark on the two biggest and most popular motorsport series in North America.

Will Davison spoke to post-race about his experience at Indy.

For a driver who has seen championships and Indianapolis wins fade away under circumstances either weird or because of admitted lapses, the 2014 season champion - as has been his aim in recent seasons - was calm and methodical in victory. "Wish I could have finished stronger". It's, yeah, amazing. I'll have to see the footage. I've had a lot of good fortune here and did still have some this month, it just didn't come on race day. "It's just not your day". It's really special being here.

"I mean, today was really disappointing for what we were hoping for and what you want from your last race, but I'm grateful for all of it", Patrick said.

"Please Roger, I've got to go back", he said into a television camera.

He said the legal team is "pretty comfortable, in the circumstances of this case, that they wouldn't be able to subpoena him personally".

"Obviously just didn't finish the way we wanted".

I said I was proud of him. "We'll certainly take a good luck at that for sure", Penske said.

"Whenever you talk about retiring to someone they are like what are you going to do next", Patrick told Reuters in an interview prior to the race. He was very pumped just to be in the race.

They were hopefully going to try and get the auto tuned up throughout the race but I think he had a rollbar issue was well; I could hear him saying he couldn't adjust the rollbar.

Danica Patrick who, despite being okay at modeling, is not very good at driving a auto. I will always think about the what-ifs. He's worked pretty hard to put this program together.

Penske arrived in Indy with four fast Chevrolets, and the engine builder was determined to snap Honda's two-race Indy 500 winning streak. "Today was a tough day". The rest of the field managed to miss Patrick as she came to rest on the grass. You couldn't help but feel a bit emotional. She led 19 total and ultimately finished fourth.

The big story, of course, is her place in racing history. "You want something so much, it comes through to you through hard work and determination".
