On Sunday, the military called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council which reviewed Mr. Sharif's remarks, and said in a statement that "it was very unfortunate that the opinion arising out of either misconceptions or grievances, was presented in disregard of concrete facts and realities".

"Militant organizations are active".

The petition requested the court to direct the FIA to initiate legal proceedings against Mr Sharif after registering an FIR.

Musharraf further said that Pakistan wasn't involved in Mumbai attacks and the ex-PM was giving statements as he was facing cases.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's statement on the 2008 Mumbai attack was "misquoted" by the Indian media and the "people in Pakistan should not become party to the propaganda", Pakistan's Premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said on Monday after a high-level meeting with the civilian and military leadership.

Against the backdrop of allegations by the opposition that he had gone against the country's interests, Sharif demanded the formation of a national commission to decide who had committed treason.

While talking to the media outside a court in Islamabad, Mr Sharif said, "What did I say that was wrong in the (Dawn) interview?" Why can't we complete the trial."I mean raised question on the timing of the revelation, and said Sharif was in power for four years and did not speak out a word about the Mumbai attacks".

Sources said he couldn't appear before the Committee because of his prior commitments and asked the parliamentary body to reschedule his appearance, allowing significant time so that he could turn up to testify before it.

Referring to a 2016 meeting in which, according to Dawn, the civilian government had informed the military leadership of Pakistan's growing worldwide isolation, Nawaz said, "Even at that time, the same things? getting our house in order? were being discussed in the NSC meeting".

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz stalwart Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, the former Interior Minister, did not endorse Sharif's statement. "Are those who tore apart the country and the Constitution patriots?" PML-N leader Nehal Hashmi also arrived at the accountability court to express solidarity with the party's supreme leader.

"Who led Pakistan towards isolation and has brought the country to a stage where the global community is not ready to accept Pakistan's narrative?"
