South Korean president to visit USA ahead of Trump's North Korea visit

05 May 2018

US and South Korean officials have maintained contact ahead of the Trump-Kim meeting, and President Moon is headed to the White House on May 22 to discuss related matters.

For its part, no USA president before Trump has seriously considered this without demanding that North Korea first give up all nuclear weapons.

"President Trump and President Moon will continue their close coordination on developments regarding the Korean Peninsula following the April 27 inter-Korean Summit", the statement continued.

The Moon visit was announced after Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, met with his South Korean counterpart, Chung Eui-yong, at the White House on Friday.

The gesture comes after Kim and Moon held a historic meeting, making progress towards achieving peace on the peninsula.

Moon came to power past year with a promise to try to improve North-South relations.

A number of North Korean defector-led advocacy organizations, such as Fighters for a Free North Korea, planned a meeting at the Odu Mountain Unification Observatory near the border with North Korea to release thousands of leaflets denouncing the regime, South Korean media reported.

Demand push for manufacturing in April as PMI rises to 51
However, even with the modest increase, the PMI still remains below the levels seen late a year ago and in early 2018. Meanwhile, firms raised their selling prices at the weakest rate in the current nine-month sequence of inflation.

Xi laid emphasis on the bilateral ties, saying that Beijing is willing to boost the relationship between the two countries by enhancing communication with South Korea, deepening pragmatic cooperation, and promoting cultural exchanges. And a lot of things have happened, with respect to the hostages.

Kim, a South Korean-born USA citizen, has been held the longest.

The president on Friday shared new details about that meeting but without specifics.

During his presidential campaign, Trump complained that South Korea does not do enough to financially support the American military commitment. Moon also said that Kim does not view the removal of US troops from South Korea as a precondition of him removing nuclear weapons from the peninsula.

"We're really doing well with North Korea", Trump said at a National Rifle Association convention on Friday.

Kim also slammed speculation during his meeting with Moon that the Punggye-ri test site was already unusable after an underground tunnel there reportedly collapsed. Kim Hak Song and Tony Kim, both of whom worked at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, have been detained for about one year. "As I said yesterday, stayed tuned".
