Uber Rent will launch in San Francisco later this month.
The launch came after the "180 days of change" program introduced by Uber past year in June for making amendments as per the request of the drivers, like tipping and compensation for the time spent by the drivers while they wait for their passengers.
One of Uber's goals is to reduce the need for individual auto ownership, thereby reducing congestion in cities.
To be sure, it's unlikely Uber will ever be able to replicate the scale of public transit, even with its many bus-like services like Express Pool.
"So we are having to discount very aggressively, much more than you'd think", Khosrowshahi said, to get people to share rides.

In addition to Wednesday's expansion of the bike sharing integration to D.C. from San Francisco, Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi also promised on a visit to the District that it would share some more data with certain cities it operates in.
"We believe these rewards will help drivers have a better driving experience when using the Uber app", said Uber's general manager for East Africa Loic Amado.
Uber said it's partnering with peer-to-peer vehicle sharing service Getaround for the program. "Now you can take a bike to rent your vehicle and go buy groceries". Uber also gets a peek into the habits and data of Jump's customers.
"For many people, getting around their city is already a multimodal affair, and this partnership will let riders seamlessly combine public transit with other transportation options like ride sharing, no matter where they need to go", Uber said.
"Autonomous is part of the solution and I think long term is going to be an important part of the solution of getting rid of auto ownership", Khosrowshahi said.
The data is being folded into separate similar information that includes taxicabs and other ride hailing companies.
Capping off a blitz of new features, Uber also announced a partnership with Masabi, a British firm which offers mobile ticketing services for public transport companies. In doing so, we will show that Uber is not just a really great product, but a really great company that is meaningfully contributing to society, beyond its business and its bottom line.
