New Zealand's Laurel Hubbard reacts after failing to make a lift in the snatch of the women's +90kg weightlifting final at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

But she twisted her elbow while attempting a record 132kg snatch and dropped the bar in pain.

However, Hubbard's efforts were cut short when her elbow gave way, and she was forced to withdraw.

Feagaiga Stowers took full advantage of Hubbard's misfortune, earning her nation a second gold medal of the day following Sanele Mao's triumph in the men's 105kg.

Hubbard's inclusion in the competition flipped the ladies's over-90kg type in to a few of the most discussed events in the guide up to the Gold Coast video games.

'A man is a man and a woman is a woman and I know a lot of changes have gone through, ' Wallwork said.

"I think you have to be true to yourself and I hope in this case this is what I have done".

"I am glad that people can come out and live their lives and be happy", said Tracey Lambrechs, who won bronze at the 2014 Games.

Formerly known as Gavin, Hubbard set national records as a male weightlifter in 1998 before subsequently transitioning, reportedly aged 35.

The report to the Commons defence select committee also warned the United Kingdom has a "limited" missile defence system. And it warned North Korea might pass on its nuclear know how to other rogue states or terror groups.

"We all transition at a different rate, and a big factor that plays a part in that is your age", she said.

Mr Grevemberg said team New Zealand has done tremendous work to protect Hubbard's welfare during the controversy, but said the weightlifting community needed to discuss how to better manage these issues.

She complies with regulations on transgender athletes laid down by the International Weightlifting Federation and the International Olympic Committee.

"The nature of sport is that things don't always go as they should", she added.

Hubbard told media today the injury was career-ending and she would not compete again.

It follows similar criticism from Australian weightlifting chief Mike Keelan.

Hubbard's withdrawal paved the way for Stowers to claim the gold with a combined total of 253kg, ahead of Nauruan lifter Charisma Amoe-Tarrant (243) and England's Emily Campbell (242). "But there's no indication at all that they were anything other than absolutely fantastic".

Coach Simon Kent said Hubbard had completely ruptured a ligament.

"The Commonwealth Games here are a model for what sport can, and should, be".
