One of the key moments during the 49ers' recruitment of Richard Sherman came when general manager John Lynch used the worst moment in the former Seattle Seahawks star's career to prod him into coming to San Francisco.
But now the full details of the contract have been released.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported over the weekend that the Niners signed Sherman, formerly of the Seahawks, to a three-year, $39.15 million contract. Jeremy Lane got cut the same day, to save $4.75 million against this year's salary cap.
If Sherman disappoints, then the contract saves them some money. Seattle also has second-year players Denalo Hill and Tedric Thompson as backups at both safety spots. Though they'll be losing Malcolm Butler once free agency starts later this week, Eric Rowe should plug into the depth chart in the No. 2 corner spot.
1st in interceptions with 32.
McDougald was fifth on the team in unassisted tackles with 45 and also had four pass defenses. Last year, he allowed a 38.5 completion percentage, the league's second-best mark.

Not too long ago, San Francisco was considered a cellar-dwelling franchise devoid of talent with a long road ahead to relevance. Sure, he was extremely annoying as a Seahawk.
Valspar leaderboard, grades: Tiger Woods thrills but falls just short of win
To be fair, he's won plenty of tournaments since the 2009 Shell Houston Open, his only other PGA TOUR title. And then, well, just look at him: "I think he's for real healthy this time", LaCava said.
What's still to be answered is how much of an impact the Achilles injury will have.
Shead was an original member of the Legion of Boom along with Sherman.
The basics of Sherman's contract include a $3 million signing bonus, $6 million in per-game roster bonuses, a $2 million 2018 roster bonus and up to $12 million in incentives.
If that is indeed true, the 29-year-old Sherman makes a pretty good point as to why he chose to head to San Francisco over staying in Seattle.
With Chancellor's future remaining cloudy due to a neck/nerve injury, re-signing McDougald was viewed as a priority for the Seahawks and he becomes the first of the 16 players on the team who could become unrestricted free agents this week to re-sign. "We have an ownership group that we're very thankful for". The 49ers had one in Brian Hoyer earlier last season for rookie quarterback C.J. Join the Golden Gate Sports team! But the Rams are still getting a lot more value out of this position. Or maybe, the agent-less Sherman would have visited the Patriots first.
It was that 2011-14 fight for NFC West - heck, National Football League - supremacy where Sherman burst onto the National Football League stage as not just a 49ers adversary but a defining symbol of a defensive-minded division. "I admit it's kinda weird having to cheer for you now", wrote one, Candle STAC Park.
Sherman's contract does pay him more this year than a prove-it deal would.
If anyone had been following the Seahawks this offseason, Sherman's statements may not come as a surprise. Imagine if Sherman picks of Russell Wilson in Seattle or here in the Bay.
