Corey Conners might be a PGA Tour rookie, but he sure didn't look like it on Saturday at the Valspar Championship.

It is hard to overstate the depths from which Woods has recently climbed, from the back surgeries to the tabloid scandals to the DUI arrest just 10 months ago, when he was found to have had five different prescription drugs in his system.

The very sight of Woods - neon pink shirt, gray trousers and cap, white shoes - was rare enough anymore to have been considered gawk-worthy on its own, his every move chronicled by hundreds of smartphone cameras. "I've been in this position many times".

"I don't think this will be leading, but at least I'm there with a chance going into the weekend", Woods said.

The 79-time TOUR victor will play in front of Conners for the second consecutive day.

England's Paul Casey was in a tie for fifth a further shot back and one in front of Adam Scott and Scot Russell Knox, who were the joint clubhouse leaders after both signing for five-under-par rounds of 66.

Tiger Woods pumps his fist after making a birdie putt during the third round of the Valspar Championship golf tournament at Innisbrook Resort, Palm Harbor, Florida March 10, 2018.

"I keep getting a little bit better here and there, making these little subtle tweaks", said Woods, who was sidelined for all of 2016 before an abortive comeback bid a year ago. I know what it's like.

"Of course, I will", he said smiling.

Birdies at the ninth and 10th followed but he stalled briefly after a bogey four at the par-three 13th.

This will be the 70th time Tiger Woods is at/within 1 of the lead after 54 holes on the PGA Tour. The crowd willing Woods to take the lead all day and he came close after he hit a wedge to seven feet at the par-5 11th and faced that birdie putt to move to 9 under and the solo lead.

Woods has been slowed by mistakes, some leading to big numbers the last time he played at the Honda Classic. Woods is happy with the way his game has progressed this week. "Really cool to see the people and the roars that he got".

"That ignited it for me", said the 2013 U.S. Open champion. I've got a shot going into tomorrow.

The even-keeled Canadian handled himself well in an unprecedented situation, but it will be different when Woods dons the red and black on Sunday.

Woods again will play with Snedeker in the final round today in the penultimate pairing while Conners and Rose will comprise the final pair.
