Asus Zenfone 5, lite and 5z announced at #MWC18

01 March 2018

It's not that we didn't know what kind of flagship Asus was about to unveil, it's just that we didn't know how it will do it. Asus chose to take some serious hits at Apple but also Samsung, all while copying several features of the iPhone X.

The front-facing camera is also dual camera setup with a 20-megapixel primary sensor with f/2.0 aperture and 85.5-degree field of view.

According to Asus, its notch is 26 percent smaller than that on the iPhone X, allowing for a more significant 90 percent screen-to-body ratio and a larger 6.2in screen size. Asus will release the Zenfone 5 Lite in March, followed by the Zenfone 5 in April and then the Zenfone 5Z in June. Asus says it will also rely on AI to ensure that the battery life of the phone is maximised. It sports a 5.5-inch HD+ (720x1440 pixels) IPS display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and 2.5D curved glass on top. The dual-SIM smartphone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box with Asus ZenUi 5.0 on top.

The new ZenFones come in three flavours: the ZenFone Lite, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z.

The iPhone X went on sale in early November, and was the best-selling iPhone every week up until the end of the year, Apple chief executive Tim Cook said during the company's most recent earning call earlier this month. The ZenFone 5Z display comes with support for DCI-P3 colour gamut and Asus' Blue-light eye care filter which was previously seen on other handsets by the company. The top end Asus ZenFone 5Z is priced at Euro 479 around ₹38,400 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage variant. At the launch event, Asus had just revealed the price of the 4GB RAM of the ZenFone 5Z which comes around Euro 479, roughly translating to Rs 38,400. They also didn't hesitate in mimicking the back of the iPhone X either, by precisely placing their dual camera setup in a vertical alignment at the top left corner. The cameras are accompanied by an LED flash, phase detection autofocus and have PixelMaster camera modes.

Fortunately, officials said no one was killed and there are no serious injuries to report. Police in Quintana Roo say the victims were taken into care in various hospitals.

The Zenfone 5 has a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor with a F/1.8 aperture and an 83° FOV. Asus says that the phone can be unlocked in 0.1 seconds using face unlock and 0.3 seconds with the fingerprint sensor. The phone supports AI Charging technology to recharge the device super quickly.

The phone comes with all the common connectivity options including Bluetooth 5.0, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, NFC and USB Type-C. The front will use an 8-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture and 84-degree FoV.

The Zenfone 5 Lite is the cheapest smartphone launched in this series.

Both the ZenFone 5 Lite and 5 are mid-tier smartphones, running on the Snapdragon 630 and 636 processors and 4GB of RAM. In spite of that, however, the Zenfone 5 isn't all that inconvenient to hold which is nice. It uses a totally different design than the 5 and 5Z but still opts for a 6-inch Full HD+ 18:9 screen with minimal bezels. It runs Android Nougat-based ZenUI 4.0.

Asus' new lineup of ZenFone 5 smartphones bring devices with ultraslim bezels, face unlock and Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon processors. Usually such variants are low on camera prowess and other specs. In the second lens, Asus uses a wide-angle lens with a 120-degree viewing angle, and also worth mentioning, is its 8MP front-facing camera.
