Air New Zealand cancels flights as South Island hit by storm

Four regions - Nelson Tasman, Selywn and Westland on the South Island and New Plymouth on the North Island - are still in a state of emergency. It earlier caused extensive damage in Samoa and American Samoa.

Some flights in and out of the capital Wellington and a number of other cities have been cancelled with authorities warning of heavy rain and gusts of up to 93mph.

Takaka is at the north end of South Island and is near Abel Tasman National Park, popular for its hiking and stunning beaches.

While the storm dumped considerable amounts of rain, there was no widespread flooding on the South Island's east coast.

In the wake of Cyclone Gita, the government of Tonga received a US$3.5 million payout from the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) based on its insurance cover against tropical cyclones.

A state of emergency has been declared for parts of New Zealand after the country was lashed by the remnants of former Cyclone Gita.

The severe weather had mostly eased on Wednesday morning, although eastern Otago was still experiencing persistent rain during Wednesday afternoon.
