American Red Cross makes urgent request for blood and platelet donations

More than 150 blood drives were forced to cancel because of it, causing over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

This network works in tandem, moving lifesaving donations throughout the system - once local patient needs are met - to help ensure blood is available when and where it's needed most, the release said.

January is officially known as National Blood Donor Month.

Platelets: The clotting portion of blood primarily given to cancer patients during treatment and always in great demand.

A recent press released stated donations during the holiday season were lower than anticipated, placing the Central Texas blood supply at a "dangerously low" level.

The Panthers later announced that Newton had been cleared to return to the game after being evaluated for a possible concussion. It comes after the Seattle Seahawks were fined $100,000 for failing to test quarterback Russell Wilson in Week 10.

Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass are encouraged to help speed up the donation process. RapidPass can now be completed on mobile devices and through the Blood Donor App. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

The Red Cross says they will be accepting all types of blood but especially need Platelets, Type O Negative, Type B negative, and Type AB.

Type O negative: The blood type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and is what doctors reach for in trauma situations. She says blood is a perishable product, and you can donate every 56 days.

Type B negative can be transfused to Rh-positive or negative patients.

"It's an important blood type for emergency situations", Lewis said. Power Red donors give a concentrated dose of red blood cells during a single donation, allowing them to maximize their impact.
