Flu is widespread in NY state, health department says

15 December 2017

Louisiana, Mississippi and SC recorded the highest number of outpatient visits for all influenza-like illnesses. Several states are seeing regional influenza activity, according to the CDC's FluView map.

For additional information about influenza, including how it is monitored in New York State, visit the Department of Health web page. The other two states seeing high influenza volumes are MS and Louisiana.

The agency says there have been over 1,800 confirmed cases of influenza in 54 counties. The case rate for Georgetown County was 32 per 100,000, while Florence County had 31. Flu injections will only be offered at the "Flu Express" on the specified dates, to individuals in good health without active infections.

People aged 75 years and older and people living in sub-Saharan African countries experienced the highest rates of flu-associated respiratory deaths.

It's become easier in recent years to get a flu shot.

To fight the flu, the CDC and local health department recommends getting a flu vaccine, taking everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs and taking flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them.

Fifty-four percent of the influenza-like illness specimens submitted to the Indiana State Department of Health's laboratory tested positive for flu in the week ending on December 2.

According to Richards, poll workers there say voter turnout has been good in the county so far, which may bode well for Moore. Jefferson and Montgomery are both urban and Democratic-leaning with Birmingham and Montgomery as their core voting blocs.

"Flu is coming, it's increasing in numbers right now, and right now is the time to get your flu shot", he said.

The researchers concluded that their work could help guide countries that want to introduce or expand flu vaccination programs and could be used to help win more support from global health groups looking to increase access to the vaccines in low- and middle-income countries.

That strain caused some of the most severe illnesses and deaths in the Southern Hemisphere during their flu season this year, particularly in older populations.

Between 4,000 and 8,000 Canadians die each year from complications of flu and about 20,000 people are hospitalized.

While there have been reports that the current vaccine is only 10 percent effective, the Centers for Disease Control said that is an Australian interim estimate of the vaccine's benefit against one flu virus, the H3N2 virus.

But the reason the 2017 shot isn't preventing as many cases of the H3N2 strain is that while scientists were growing the virus in chicken eggs, that strain mutated.
