Trump, who appeared with Hatch in Utah on Monday, told reporters he is urging the 83-year-old senator to seek an eighth six-year term in next year's congressional midterm elections, Politico reported.
Trump's former chief strategist Steve Bannon reportedly also has considered endorsing Hatch to block Romney, the Washington Examiner reported Sunday, with a source telling the newspaper Bannon would pick Hatch "10 times out of 10".
The Atlantic reported in April that Romney, formerly governor of MA and the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, was considering the possibility of running for Hatch's seat.
Trump has vowed to try to block Romney, whom he views as a potential thorn in his side in the Senate, according to a White House official and an outside adviser who have discussed the possible bid with the president. "I don't know that he knows what he's going to get with Romney, but it's not going to be what he's got with Hatch", Jowers reportedly said. Just a few weeks ago, one source told the Atlantic that the plan for Hatch to retire and Romney to run was "reported to me as a 'done deal, '" and back in March Hatch called Romney the "perfect" candidate to fill his seat should he opt to step down.

Despite the Breitbart chairman's declarations of "war" against the Republican establishment, Hatch - the longest serving current Republican senator and "ally" to Senate Majority Leader (and Breitbart nemesis) Mitch McConnell - is a more preferable choice than Romney.
"Mitt's a good man", Trump said, according to a pool report, when a reporter asked if he was trying to send the former nominee a message with his endorsement of Hatch. Trump himself seemed to confirm the theory during a speech at the Utah State Capitol on Monday, when he addressed Hatch before the crowd.
In September, UtahPolicy.com similarly reported that Romney is planning to run for Senate pending Hatch's retirement.
He charged that Trump's domestic policies would lead to recession and his foreign policies would make the world more risky. "His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University". Trump previously said he is doing it for Hatch.
