Officer-involved shooting in Arlington mall

28 November 2017

Security personnel and Arlington police were following William Paul Dodd, 21, about 4:20 p.m. Sunday after he stole two pairs of Ray-Ban's from the Sunglass Hut in The Parks at Arlington mall, police Lt. Christopher Cook said.

A robbery suspect was shot by a police officer at a Texas mall this weekend after police say he pointed a fake gun at them.

APD released three still images from the video, which Cook said detectives have reviewed.

Anyone at the Parks Mall is able to go to their vehicle.

"Officers can not make a distinction between the two, a split second decision", he said.

Cook says the male suspect then pulled a replica handgun from his waistband and was shot by an officer who thought the weapon was real. Police have not yet identified him. The shopping center was evacuated and closed for the rest of the day.

Approximately an hour and twenty minutes prior to his theft at the mall, Dodd phoned 9-1-1 and claimed he was a suspect in an evading arrest case and was at Stovall Park. He did note that Dodd had been charged with filing a false police report in September after reporting to police he had been shot in a drive-by shooting.

The unidentified suspect was taken to an area hospital. Police have not been able to interview him due to his condition.

Cook said the police are working with the District Attorney's office to file the appropriate charges against Dodd.

Cook said the department has seen imitation weapons circulating for quite some time and "serious conversations as a society need to be had as to why the imitations look so real, including talks directly with manufacturers".
