Lawyers for Mr Flynn labelled the allegations "outrageous" and "false".
If this sounds vaguely familiar, it's because the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year on a meeting Flynn hosted in NY in September 2016, in which participants basically talked about kidnapping Fethullah Gulen, removing him from his home in Pennsylvania, circumventing America's extradition process, and delivering him to Turkey's government, which considers Gulen a unsafe enemy.
Flynn is a central figure in Mueller's investigation because of conversations he had with then-Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak past year and because he waited until March to retroactively register with the Justice Department as a foreign agent for the work he did for a Turkish businessman.
Investigators are looking into a proposed scheme where disgraced National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and his son could have received $15 million for delivering an exiled cleric into Turkish hands, according to a report. These include Flynn's partners, Bijan Kian and Brian McCauley, and Flynn's son, Michael G. Flynn.
He is believed to be under investigation for not registering as a foreign agent, a charge leveled at former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort in an indictment from Mueller.
"One person familiar with the alleged discussions about Mr. Gulen said Mr. Flynn also was prepared to use his influence in the White House to further the legal extradition of the cleric, who lives in Pennsylvania", WSJ added.
He is now the center of criminal, military and congressional investigations that seek to unearth a possible connection between that and his decisions while he was the president's adviser.
Hope Solo Accuses Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter of Sexual Assault
In 2004, he landed in hot water after saying women's soccer should use sex appeal as a way to grow the game . Blatter during the FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala 2012 at the Kongresshaus on January 7, 2013 in Zurich, Switzerland.
"If Mueller has sufficient evidence that Flynn and his son were involved in this audacious plot to kidnap the cleric, the special counsel can use that to pressure the former Trump campaign associate to flip and tell the FBI everything he knows of relevance to the Russian Federation investigation".
The meeting allegedly discussed a secret payout of up to $15 million dollars if, once in office, Flynn would engineer the deportation to Turkey of Fethullah Gulen, a political rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as help free Erdogan-linked Iranian-Turkish businessman Reza Zarrab from prison.
Most of what has been reported about Mueller's questioning of Flynn's lobbying work has concerned his efforts on behalf of Turkey.
"Out of respect for various investigations regarding the 2016 campaign, we have intentionally avoided responding to every rumor or allegation raised in the media".
According to the sources, Mueller recently interviewed witnesses over the December 2016 meeting between the Turkish officials and Flynn at the swanky 21 Club in New York City.
After Trump took office, Flynn served as national security adviser for 24 days before being forced to resign for misleading White House officials about his contacts with Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergei Kislyak.
