Italy legend Pirlo announces retirement from professional football

07 November 2017

Not only is my adventure in NY coming to an end but my journey as a footballer as well. After wading across the clubs at the start of his career, from Brescia, to Inter Milan, to Reggina, Pirlo became part of AC Milan who won two Champions League trophies in 2003 and 2007.

It's always been announced but yesterday it was confirmed - Andre Pirlo is retiring from professional football.

He had already announced that this season would be his last as a player but his team lost his final game Sunday's Major League Soccer playoff match against Colombus Crew.

"Thank you to the awesome supporters, thank you to the coaching staff and everybody that works behind the scenes, thank you to my team-mates".

By the time he won the World Cup, Pirlo was being hailed as the world's best playmaker and when his form at Milan began to decline, he was offered a move to Juventus.

The midfielder's shock move to Juventus saw him help The Old Lady to four successive Serie A titles stretching from 2012-2015 as well as two more SuperCoppa Italiana titles in 2012 -2013 and one Coppa Italia in 2015 before his move to New York City.

The researchers also noted that as the patients got sleepier, they also had more difficulty completing the task at hand. The team also discovered "slow" brain waves similar to those that occur during sleep in exhausted regions of the brain.

Pirlo indicated in an interview back in October that this season would be his last, and he confirmed it again with his latest announcement.

"You realise yourself that the time has come. At my age, it's fine to say enough is enough", he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I want to thank everybody for the kindness and support they have shown me in this incredible city", Pirlo wrote.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup™ victor played his final game for New York City on Sunday when the club were knocked out of the MLS play-offs by Columbus Crew.

"I would like to. thank my family. every team I had the honour to play for, every team mate I have been pleased to play alongside, all the people who made my career so incredible", he said.

You will always be on my side and in my heart.
